Mission Statement

Center for Diversity; Democracy and Inclusion in Education

The Center for Inclusion and Democracy in Education at the University of Hildesheim per-forms research into the opportunities and challenges facing processes of inclusion in increas-ingly diverse societies. The Center regards itself as a think tank and platform for interdisci-plinary exchange on the complex subject of heterogeneity and educational participation. Its members consist of experts in the fields of education, social science and cultural studies, and its work examines the multifaceted and interlinked aspects of diversity, integration and par-ticipation in educational processes and educational systems.

Research at the Center for Inclusion and Democracy in Education focuses on educational participation in so-called “immigration societies.” The Center does not consider migration to be a “problem” or “deficit” that must be addressed as such; on the contrary, migration is seen as a tremendous resource. Above all, the Center seeks to bring about a reduction in the educational disadvantages experienced by children and adolescents with an “immigration background” and those from minority families. With this goal in mind, our team performs research into the structures and processes – including forms of institutional discrimination – that result in educational disadvantages. At the same time, we aim to recognize educational capital – for example, multilingualism.

The Center for Center for Inclusion and Democracy in Education initiates, monitors and links research and practice-oriented projects relating to educational integration. We also develop best-practice models and implementation strategies. Our objective is to generate an effec-tive regional, national and international network that incorporates research and practice-oriented projects and involves a community of experts and decision-makers drawn from civil society, politics, culture and business.

  • FIELDS OF ACTION - THE UNIVERSITY

    ZBI flankers the development and the expansion of widespread integrative measures, support and consultation at the University of Hildesheim which take the diversity of our students into account. For the purpose of a backing of our students, that is orientated at inclusion and is conscious of diversity, ZBI implements ongoing diversity monitoring.
